Whoa that's not appropriate. That's a swear word. Do you know what swear words are? Swear words, what is a swear word?Well, swear words are basically just bad words. Nobody really knows what a swear word is.
I mean it's sort of a special kind it's a special category of word in English, for example, if you're watching TV and someone says a certain word then it will be beeped out.
Okay, instead of the word the people who are monitoring the TV show or the news or something like that, they hit a button beep and it, it bleeps out the the bad word.
Okay but why, what is this category of swear words?
Well, nobody really understands it, but basically it just means bad words okay.
Swear words can also be called cuss words or curse words.
Okay so cuss words curse words just mean swear words, okay or we can use these terms here,
coarse language,
foul language,
offensive language,
crude language,
vulgar language,
lewd language.
Okay all of these are basically synonyms that mean bad language.
Okay all of them are basically the same thing they refer to the same kinds of language.
Okay now look at this guy this guy is saying a bad word right, so we could say -
he's cussing or he's cursing or he's swearing.
Okay all of these mean the same thing, now it's sort of funny very often.
We replace bad words with symbols like this because if it's a really bad word then we don't want to show it.
so we replace it with these symbols okay, now very and we we only replace the vowel with a symbol.
Okay like look at this word here.
so this is the word shit and we've replaced the eye with an asterisk. okay
that symbol is called an asterisk.okay why did we just replace the vowel.
why didn't we replace the other letters.
I have no idea that's a very good question, but for some reason in English very often we just take out the vowel and we put in some other symbol. okay
so what makes a swear word, a swear word
that's a very good question
well if a group of people all agree that a word is bad then it's bad right, but the problem is that it varies based on the region that you're in. okay
for example, take a look at this word here fanni in American English Fanny means.
but okay like you're but that's not a bad word right, if if a kid is sitting on his butt, a mother might say hey sit down on your butt, if a kid is running around
hey it's, it's lunchtime sit down on your butt and eat your food
okay so it's a very innocent word, it does it's not bad at all but the word.
Fanny in British English means vagina.
okay so there's a really big difference there, so it's a regional thing right.
American English, British English they each have have different words that they consider bad. okay
this is a fanny pack this kind of a of a bag that you wear around your waist is called a fanny pack. okay
so in American English it's called a fanny pack, do you think it's called a fanny pack in British English?
no, okay, because in British English the word fanny is a bad word. okay, so there are some very real differences between bad word.
it just depends on if a group of people agrees that it's bad or not in the u.s.
everyone agrees Fanny is fine it's a good word well it's not good but it's it's a medium it's normal. okay
but in in Britain they all agree that Fanny is a bad word, so that can cause some miscommunications .
you know between the different cultures. anyway I just want to teach you some of the the swear words that we we use in English.
okay now I've categorized these sort of by the strongest ones up here and the more mild ones down here.
now this is just my opinion you might have a different opinion but I mean in my opinion these are the strongest ones,
cunt, fuck, motherfucker, cock, cock sucker, dick,
okay those are probably the worst these ones are sort of more medium, bitch, son of a bitch, asshole, damn, shit,
okay and then the more mild ones he'll piss, ass bastard, crap, I mean you know it probably everyone might have a different list.
okay this is just the way I did it and I mean these are not the only swear words.
we have in English there are hundreds and hundreds of words like this, but I think these are the most common ones that you've probably heard in English movies and stuff like that. okay
so a question you might have is should you use swear words if you're learning English should you use swear words well when I was learning German.
I don't speak German but I can speak a little bit of German. okay so when I was in Germany, learning German it was sort of fun for me to, I learn some German swear words,
for me it was a little bit fun, I was always very careful you know I never used swear words when I was talking to people but I learned what they were and for me to say them.
you know just in my apartment it was sort of fun I mean so it's it's up to you if you want to use swear words or not, but what I would say is if you're just learning the English language and
if you don't know too much about English culture yet it's probably best not to use any swear words in your speech okay
and then when you get more comfortable with English and you know more about English culture I mean then it's up to you you can swear if you want, but if you never use swear words that's great too.
ok the safest thing is just to never ever use swear words for the rest of your life then you're always going to be safe, but I mean a lot of people use swear words in English,
so I mean it's your choice whatever you want to do just be careful. okay now context is up is obviously a really important factor when
we're talking about swearing are you at a party with your friends or are you having lunch with your grandma there's a big difference in context right.
the kinds of words you use with your friends is going to be different than the words you use around your grandma right.
it's a different context also the purpose of the words is it's a it really matters.
okay let's say for example I'm hammering a nail bang bang bang bang and I miss the nail and I hit my thumb damn it ah okay
I swore because I hit my thumb I'm expressing frustration and and pain right.
so that's why I swear that's that's very different than if I swear at a person like if I'm if I'm angry or I'm trying to insult someone I'm trying to offend someone like if I would say you
son of a bitch okay, that's really aggressive so in my opinion that kind of swearing is much worse, then the hammering kind of swearing where you miss your thumb and you say damn it.
okay so I mean that's just my opinion what do you think do you think there's a difference yeah.
anyway let's do some homework, I want to know do you ever swear in your language, do you ever use swear words in your language or do you have very clean speech, clean speech means you never say bad words at all. okay so let me know in your language do you use swear words let me know down there in the comments and I'll see you over in the next episode of mad English TV.
Take are!
